Swedish Prime Minister Expects NATO Ratification Soon, No Demands from Turkey

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Friday that Turkey is not making demands on his country to secure ratification of its NATO bid and expects it to happen “relatively soon.”

Details: Speaking to reporters after the Joint Expeditionary Force leaders’ summit, Kristersson said Stockholm had “done their part.”

“We have fulfilled our commitments to improve cooperation with Turkey to prevent financing of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which Ankara recognizes as terrorist – Ed.) or activities directed against Turkey,” he said.

The Swedish prime minister also spoke of “much better” cooperation between the police and security services of both countries and added that “other countries are clearly looking forward to the ratification” of Sweden’s NATO membership.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg yesterday statedwhich expects the Turkish Parliament to ratify the protocol on Sweden’s accession, as agreed at the summit in Vilnius.

Let us recall that in July at the Vilnius NATO summit, Turkey agreed to unblock the process of ratification of Sweden’s accession to the Alliance in exchange for help in getting closer with the European Union.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would submit ratification of Sweden’s bid to join NATO to parliament when it meets after the summer recess in October.

However, the ratification of the Swedish application was in jeopardy after a series of Koran burnings in Sweden, which angered many Muslim countries, including Turkey. In addition to Turkey, Hungary did not ratify Sweden’s application.
