There are many indications that the motive behind the incident is the Koran burnings that have taken place in Stockholm this summer, a police source told the newspaper.
The assassination attempt occurs only a few days after several Arab embassies urged their citizens to leave Lebanon due to the tense situation in the country.
– It was a Molotov cocktail-like bomb that was thrown at the embassy’s main entrance without exploding. Our bomb technicians removed it from the scene, and we are working hard to find the perpetrators, the police source told the newspaper.
A Molotov cocktail is a bottle with petrol or other flammable substance and a rag in the neck of the bottle as a fuse.
The day before, it became known that Swedish police have approved yet another demonstration where the Koran will be burned. This has led to major riots throughout the summer and earlier this year – both in Stockholm and in Muslim countries.
The Swedish authorities condemn the burning of the Koran, but due to the legislation on freedom of expression, the police have not been able to prohibit such actions.
Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet commented on the matter.
