Swedes also rarely have summer visits: Meet Sten

The walrus may be the same as was observed outside Halland a few weeks ago, and which has already moved south to Arild in northwestern Skåne.

– It is the first walrus in Scania as far as I know, says Kennet Lundin, lecturer in marine biology at the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History to Helsingborgs Dagblad who writes that the walrus has been given the nickname Sten.

Walruses are usually found in the Arctic and surrounding oceans of the northern hemisphere. It is very unusual for these mammals to be observed in Swedish waters, but it happened a couple of times in the 20th century.

Earlier this year, a walrus in Smögen in Bohuslän settled on a jetty for jet skis.

The walrus has long been an endangered species, but today there are larger populations, especially in the Pacific Ocean.

In Norway, the walrus was protected in 1952, and it is listed as vulnerable on the Norwegian Red List. This spring, walruses have been observed several times in southern Norway, most recently in a leisure boat outside Kragerø on Saturday.
