Sweden’s NATO Membership Ratification and Hungary’s Delay

He said that Sweden’s entry into NATO would make the entire Alliance stronger. Stoltenberg congratulated the Turkish Parliament’s decision to ratify Sweden’s membership and thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“I also welcome this week’s clear message of support from Prime Minister Orbán and his government. I look forward to Hungary’s ratification as soon as Parliament reconvenes,” the NATO Secretary General said.

It is reported that the Hungarian Parliament will meet for its next meeting at the end of February.

Earlier, Hungary said it would not rush to ratify Sweden’s application to join NATO. The parliament emphasized that they would not convene an extraordinary meeting, despite statements by some deputies.

Sweden’s path to NATO

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO. Finland moved faster and joined the Alliance in June 2023.

Turkey blocked Sweden’s entry for a long time. On January 23, the Turkish parliament ratified Sweden’s application to join NATO.

Budapest promised that it would not be the last to ratify Sweden’s application. However, the vote in the Hungarian parliament was postponed several times. Recently, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called on his parliament to support Swedish integration.
