King Carl Gustaf of Sweden will celebrate a special milestone on September 15, 2023. On that day, the king has been on the Swedish throne for exactly 50 years. This makes Carl Gustaf the longest reigning monarch in the country. Reason enough to celebrate this grandly with a banquet, and these royals are on the guest list. A tip of the veil: it will be a real family reunion.
The special anniversary of the 77-year-old monarch is being celebrated on a grand scale in the Scandinavian country. Special working visits have been organized throughout the month. The festivities will conclude on Friday, September 15, with a grand banquet to which royal guests have also been invited. On that date, Carl Gustaf officially became king in 1973. This was immediately after the death of his grandfather, King Gustaf Adolf. After all, Carl Gustaf’s father died in a plane crash in 1947, when Carl Gustaf was only eight months old.

Family reunion with Scandinavian royals
The guest list to celebrate Carl Gustaf’s government anniversary is filled with royals. Sweden’s neighboring countries are especially well represented at the banquet. This also turns the anniversary banquet into a small family reunion, because the monarchs now on the throne are all related. For example, Queen Margrethe is the direct niece of King Carl Gustaf.

As you may know, the Queen of Greece, Anne-Marie, is the sister of the Danish Queen Margrethe. This also makes Anne-Marie a niece of the Swedish King Carl Gustaf. Even though Greece is no longer officially a monarchy and Anne-Marie now spends her time elsewhere, she still has close ties with her cousin.
And she also has a close bond with the other Scandinavian royals. King Harald of Norway is her second cousin. It is therefore only logical that she received an invitation to the banquet.

The Oranges are not invited
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are not invited to Carl Gustaf’s banquet. Despite the good ties between Sweden and the Netherlands, the royal couple will not travel to Stockholm. But the Orange will certainly congratulate the king in their own way on this impressive anniversary.
