The SVP has had enough once more. Enough that Germans, Italians and Poles immigrate to Switzerland to work here. That is why she submitted the popular initiative for moderate immigration in summer 2018. We will vote on it on September 27th.
The SVP itself calls the referendum a limitation initiative because it is intended to limit immigration. Opponents and the media often call it a termination initiative because the SVP is calling for the termination of the free movement of persons agreement with the EU as a last resort.
In the end it should be terminated
What’s right now? Specifically, the initiative text says:
- Switzerland regulates the immigration of foreigners independently.
- No new agreements may be concluded or obligations entered into that grant foreigners the freedom of movement.
- Existing contracts or obligations may not be adapted in such a way that they allow free movement of persons.
Alone in a wide hallway
That means: The free movement of persons agreement with the EU must be renegotiated – in the sense that the free immigration of persons is no longer permitted. The Federal Council has until the end of September 2021 to do this. “If this does not succeed, the Federal Council cancels the agreement within a further 30 days”, so the demand of the initiative.
Of the parties, the SVP is fighting on its own. The Federal Council, but also the SP, Greens, FDP, CVP, BDP and GLP reject the initiative.
