Suzuki Reportedly Rejects Toyota’s Request to Make Jimny and Swift Twins, Citing Iconic Status

Jakarta

Suzuki reportedly rejected Toyota’s request to make a Suzuki Jimny twin. According to Suzuki, the Jimny is an iconic Suzuki product, which cannot be made into a twin version. Apart from the Jimny, Suzuki also rejected Toyota’s request to make a Swift twin.

So far, Suzuki is known to have close collaboration with Toyota in producing twin cars. In India, the two Japanese manufacturers share product platforms. The Suzuki Baleno will be made into a twin called the Toyota Glanza, then the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix will be made into a twin, the Suzuki Invicto.

Taking advantage of the existing cooperation, Toyota apparently has the desire to make a Suzuki Jimny twin. Toyota does not yet have a compact SUV model with a 4×4 drive configuration. Therefore, the Suzuki Jimny is seen as a suitable figure to be used.rebadge to be a Toyota SUV product.

For Toyota, having their own version of the ‘Jimny’ in the product range will give their customers a cheaper 4×4 alternative to the Fortuner and Hilux. On the other hand, this could give Suzuki a big boost in Jimny sales.

However, as stated by Suzuki to Coach India, Suzuki subtly rejected Toyota’s desire to make a Jimny twin. The reason is, Jimny is a car that has become an icon for the company. So it is very unlikely to be a twin.

“This is like asking Toyota to let us engineer (make a twin) the Land Cruiser. The (Jimny) model that is at the core of our brand (Suzuki) is not meant to be shared and both companies respect that,” said the source.

Even though it is unlikely that a Jimny with the Toyota logo will be realized, Toyota still has the opportunity to produce its own version of a compact 4×4 SUV, namely the Mini Land Cruiser model.

Next to Jimny. Suzuki also rejected Toyota’s request to make a Swift twin. According to the page Motoroids, Swift is one of the backbones of Suzuki’s sales in India. This car can sell an average of more than 17,000 units every month. So it’s not surprising that Toyota is desperate to make a twin.
