Suspected coronavirus on large ship not confirmed – News International: Europe

The all-clear was given on board the cruise ship “Costa Smeralda”, which was detained on Thursday on suspicion of coronavirus in the port of the city of Civitavecchia near Rome. According to tests carried out in the Roman hospital “Spallanzani”, which specializes in infectious diseases, there was no evidence of the causative agent of the lung disease from China.

Because of the suspicion of the virus, around 7,000 people – including around 6,000 passengers – had been held on board the “Costa Smeralda” in Civitavecchia for hours. According to 20min.ch, they also included 63 Swiss citizens. The operator of the ship is the shipping company Costa Crociere.

A tourist from the Chinese Macao Special Administrative Region had symptoms such as fever and breathing problems on board that could be a sign of the corona virus. Her husband had also been examined.

The fifth largest cruise ship of the Genoa shipping company had undertaken a one-week cruise in the western Mediterranean and traveled from Palma de Mallorca to Civitavecchia. Civitavecchia is Italy’s largest cruise port.

Tours canceled

Some suspected cases of coronavirus have been reported in Italy, but have not been confirmed. Hoteliers in Rome complained that thousands of Chinese tourists had canceled their stay in the metropolis. Many Chinese restaurants reported a drop in the number of guests.

The cruise company MSC canceled three tours of the ship “Splendida” with 6880 seats on Thursday. Planned trips to Japan in early February are affected. The company emphasized that no suspected cases had occurred on any of its ships. Costa Crociere, in turn, canceled nine trips from China that should have taken place from today to next Tuesday.
