Suspect of murder of Esmee: ‘Suddenly I realized that she was no longer breathing’ | Inland

After Olivier van de G. realized during the romp that the girl was no longer breathing, he is said to have panicked and decided to take her body away. The girl’s remains were found on New Year’s Eve last year. She sat in an unnatural position against a tree in a green belt on the Melchior Treublaan in Leiden, one and a half kilometers from the home of Olivier van de G.

Mysterious

Her family had filed a missing persons report the night before, and on that occasion immediately mentioned the name of her gymnastics teacher. Esmee had been “secret about the contacts with Van de G,” said her family.

The police came to the door of the gymnastics teacher twice, who was very surprised at her disappearance.

He was arrested shortly after Esmee was found.

25,000 messages exchanged

The girl is said to have had a sexual relationship with Olivier van de G. since January 10 last year. The couple exchanged 25,000 messages via WhatsApp, among others, which were partly sexual in nature. Esmee is said to have threatened to reveal their relationship several times. Sex with a minor is punishable, even if the minor consents to it. It would have major consequences for Olivier van de G.. Esmee would also have threatened to commit suicide several times.

Olivier van de G. only came to the police during his sixth interrogation on February 25 with the story about the romp that got out of hand. The girl was angry because she had bumped her leg in his house. Fumbling was their way to calm her down, Van de G. told the police. “I took a hold of her and suddenly realized that she was no longer breathing.”

He wanted to hide that Esmee had been at his house that evening. He lifted her body onto his back and took her by bicycle to Melchior Treublaan. Olivier van de G., a frail figure who looks younger than his 32 years, told the court that “it is terrible what has happened. Things have happened that I was not aware of. I would like to help resolve this as best I can.” The word regret never passed his lips.

‘It happened on a whim’

According to lawyer Job Knoester, there was no preconceived plan to kill Esmee, so it was not murder. “It happened on a whim. The movement of the girl’s body also happened in a kind of haze. A panic reaction.”

The public prosecutor wants Olivier van de G. to be examined by a psychiatrist and a neuropsychologist. The request for a neuropsychologist is special. It could indicate a suspicion of brain damage in Olivier van de G. His lawyer Job Knoester does not want to say anything about it, but says he can understand the request.

‘Confronting’

Esmee’s family found it confrontational to see the man who killed their daughter, says lawyer Robert van der Laan, who assists the relatives. The family does not yet want to respond to the story about the ‘romp around’, says Van der Laan. “What they especially want is to know what exactly happened.”

The next hearing is on June 24. There is no date for the substantive treatment yet.
