Suspect (24) surprised that Salman Rushdie is still alive immediately after stabbing | Abroad

The assault took position final week at a conference in upstate New York. The arrest of 24-12 months-aged Hadi Matar adopted soon following. He tells the New York Post that he does not assume Rushdie is “a great particular person”. “He is a person who attacked Islam”.

According to the newspaper, Matar did not want to say no matter if he was motivated by the now deceased Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. In 1989, he issued a fatwa, a loss of life sentence, from Rushdie for his novel Verses of the Devil. This book is regarded as blasphemous by some Muslims. Rushdie went into hiding following several threats until finally the Iranian federal government renounced the fatwa in 1998.

The suspect, whom Ayatollah Khomeini describes as “a superb man or woman”, suggests he has read through some web pages of Rushdie’s controversial e book. He is also rumored to have viewed movies of Rushdie offering lectures. In it Matar Rushdie appeared as “insincere”.

Matar’s dad and mom are Lebanese, but he himself was born in the United States. His one mother instructed the media that his son was not lifted religiously but may well have become radicalized immediately after going to his father in Lebanon.
