Surviving an Otter Attack: A Terrifying Encounter on the River

The three women took a trip early this month to celebrate Royce’s birthday. They were floating on a tire in the middle of the river when the otter suddenly appeared behind one of them, disking Royce on Facebook. “I didn’t even get a chance to warn.”

Bitten all over

The otter went berserk for five minutes. They were bitten on their face, arms, ears, hands, legs and ankle. Finally, they managed to reach the river bank and the otter took off.

“Without any exaggeration, I didn’t think I’d make it out of that river alive,” Royce writes. They called emergency number 911, but because the area is quite remote, it was difficult for the emergency services to reach them. “I was covered in blood. It was cold and we were wet.”

It took more than an hour for an ambulance to arrive. Royce says she felt very weak and told her friends that she loved them and that they should take care of her children.

Treated

Royce was eventually taken by helicopter to a local hospital, while the other two women were treated at the scene. She received multiple stitches in various places on her body and underwent surgery on her face and ears. “I’m thankful to be alive.”

Otter attacks very rare. Only when they have just had young can they attack people in exceptional cases if they come too close, says an expert at CNN.
