Survey Anomalies in 2024 Elections: Indo Barometer Researcher Responds

Jakarta

Indo Barometer researcher M Qodari responded to claims that there were anomalies in the survey of presidential and vice presidential candidates submitted by the survey institute and political consultant Indopol regarding the 2024 elections. Qodari said that the issue of survey anomalies showing high levels of ‘undecided voters’ only reflected failure in conducting the survey.

“This means that if it is stated by a certain institution, it is a failure or inability of that institution to carry out a survey properly,” said Qodari in a written statement, Friday (26/1/2024).

Qodari shared his experience of being involved in surveys since 2003. He said that he only found that the percentage of respondents who hid their choices during the survey was around 3 to 5 percent.

“So far, people in Indonesia have had no problems conveying their choices. In fact, many respondents are happy to tell the story,” said Qodari.

“Let alone now, when the democratic era has been enjoyed by the Indonesian people for a long time, even when we surveyed it in 2003, not long after the New Order era, it turned out that the Indonesian people were open to their choices,” he continued.

If there are respondents who do not want to state their choice or do not want to map it out, this will have a large impact on the number of ‘don’t know’ or ‘don’t answer’ or ‘secret’. However, Qodari said the number of undecided voters should only be 3-5 percent.

“But in reality it is between 3 and 5 percent,” he said.

Previously, Indopol did not release the electability level for each pair of presidential and vice presidential candidates because during the survey they reportedly faced rejection. This rejection was considered an anomaly because it had not occurred in several previous surveys.

“For example, in Blitar Regency, 85 percent said they did not answer (which candidate to choose), the undecided voters were very high. We looked at Kediri, the undecided voters were 40 percent,” said Executive Director of Indopol Survey Ratno Sulistyanto.
