The Supreme Court announced it will begin hearing arguments in the case the week of April 22, and Trump’s election meddling lawsuit has been put on hold for the time being.
Trump was scheduled to appear in court in Washington on March 4 to answer charges of conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Proceedings in that lawsuit, however, have been frozen while his immunity case moves forward through the courts.
Trump, 77, who has the best chance of winning the Republican nomination for president in November, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case.
“Without Presidential Immunity, the President will not be able to function properly or make decisions in the best interests of the United States. He must not be driven by fear of retribution!” Trump announced on his social media platform “Truth Social”.
The Supreme Court, which is dominated by conservative justices, said that in agreeing to hear the case, it was “expressing no opinion” on the “reasonableness” of a lower court’s decision to deny Trump immunity.
A verdict in this case is expected by the end of the Supreme Court’s current term in June.
The question of whether a former US president is immune from prosecution for actions during his presidency is unprecedented in US law, as no former US president had been charged with a crime before Trump.
