The Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC) activated the new mechanism for investigating the leadership of the prosecution after reports were received against the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev and the head of the investigation Borislav Sarafov, who were fired a day ago by the Supreme Judicial Council.
Under the new rules, the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court has 14 days to make a list of all judges in the District Courts of Appeal who have reached the highest rank. The second requirement for listing is that they have worked as criminal judges in the last seven years prior to listing.
The judge who will investigate the chiefs in the prosecutor’s office is randomly selected from this list.
Finally, the Prosecution College in the Supreme Judicial Council reassigned him as a special prosecutor until the end of the case. The actions of this special prosecutor will be supervised by a supreme judge until the end of the pre-trial proceedings.
The first report against the chief prosecutor was sent to the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office on June 8 by Zdravko S., but there is no information about what she complained about. On the same date, there is a report from Radoslav P. to the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation, which indicates data on actions and inactions of the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev.
Only a day later – on June 9 – the Supreme Court of Cassation was approached with a report received by Faik H., who claimed that the chief prosecutor had “committed a crime of a general nature”.
During the same period, the Supreme Court was also referred to two reports against the head of the investigation, Borislav Sarafov. One is related to the case against Petyo Evroto, and the other is related to media publications about real estate transactions related to Sarafov. It is interesting that the initiator of the second signal was the head of Ivan Geshev’s press center – Veselin Ivanov.

It is a donation by Svetlin Tanchev, made on February 3, 2021, for Borislav Sarafov’s mother and Bobby Sarafov’s grandmother – Veneta. The donated property is a plot of 1783 square meters in the Vitosha area. Tanchev is a former deputy who was elected by GERB in the 41st and 42nd National Assembly, and by “BND – People’s Union” in the 43rd Parliament. As Mediapool wrote 10 years ago, Svetlin Tanchev is Borislav Sarafov’s first cousin.
On May 8, when these publications came out, Borislav Sarafov for the first time attacked Ivan Geshe for misleading him about traveling with his family during the attempted assassination.
Just before the dismissal of Ivan Geshev from the SCC, an investigation into extortion and the use of illegal surveillance and recording techniques was launched against the former investigator Petyo Petrov, known by the nickname Euroto. Euro, who is believed to be close to Borislav Sarafov, was declared wanted by Interpol and the Schengen Information System, along with his child by his ex-wife Lyubena Petrova, who in recent days disclosed to the Anti-Corruption Fund how prosecutors were part of a machine to extort businessmen. Sarafov was the main target of Petrova’s testimony.
