The Supreme Court in Italy decided to acquit the late Argentine star Diego Armando MaradonaHe was charged with tax evasion, 3 years after his death in November 2020, as a result of a severe heart attack.

Investigations into the player’s tax payments began in the early 1990s and resulted in charges worth 37 million euros ($40.38 million) and the confiscation of some of the player’s belongings during his visits to Italy.

The case is related to the fees paid by the Napoli club, to the late Argentine star, in image rights payments to foreign accounts (in Liechtenstein) by two foreign companies, the value of which amounted to 37 million euros, more than half of which was in default interest.

Angelo Pisani, the Argentine star’s lawyer, said: “The matter is over and I can say clearly and without fear of falling into contradiction that Maradona was never a tax evader.”

He added: “The final ruling is fair to the fans and the values of the sport, but above all it is fair to the memory of Maradona.”

He continued: “The heirs now have the legal right to demand compensation. I hope they will use it in memory of their father.”
