Supposedly extinct elephant shrew discovered in Horn of Africa

The species has long been on the Global Wildlife Conservation group’s list of the “25 most wanted lost species”.

Since the 1970s, there have been only 39 stuffed specimens of the species in various museums around the world, as the only physical evidence that the species ever existed.

The researchers say that the new discovery strengthens the hope of still finding species out there that have been thought to be extinct for a long time.

The Somali elephant shrew has joined the ranks of several newly discovered species in recent years, including the giant bee in Indonesia and the silver-backed dwarf muskrat in Vietnam, which is a deer-like species the size of a rabbit.
