What is a Supermoon?

Quoting the Space page, Supermoon is a Super Full Moon phenomenon which occurs when the moon is closer to the earth. When the Supermoon phenomenon occurs, the moon will look bigger and brighter than usual.

This Supermoon or super full moon phenomenon makes the moon 30% brighter and a 14% increase in the lunar disk as seen from Earth. However, generally this difference is not visible to the naked eye, unless someone really pays attention to the brightness of the moon every night.

The cause of the Supermoon phenomenon is because the moon’s orbit around the earth does not form a perfect circle, aka an oval, due to the influence of Earth’s gravity, so there are certain times in the moon’s orbit that are closer to the earth. That’s why the Supermoon phenomenon occurs, namely when the moon is in the full phase of the 29.5 day lunar cycle and is at Perigee, the closest point to the earth in its orbit.
