Super Follow: Paid Twitter is here

The latest Twitter shareholders’ meeting has confirmed what was already an open secret: the implementation of subscriptions on the social network. In the purest Patreon style, we can pony $ 4.99 per month for accessing exclusive content from certain users, which will be known as ‘Super Follow’.

According to the first screenshots of the functionality, in addition to restricted tweets, the contributor will receive newsletters, tags that will recognize your contribution, access to private groups and discounts on certain products (if we sponsor a brand or the content creator has his own online store).

In practice, however, these Super Follows could lead to a torrent of risque posts. Something similar to what ‘Onlyfans’ offers, where numerous influencers and adult film stars show their shame in exchange for a periodic fee.

This movement supposes a new source of income for Twitter (beyond advertising), you will take a commission for each transaction. As of when it remains an unknown, since no specific date has been announced.

But the Super Follows aren’t the only novelty on the way for the platform. Those responsible have also announced ‘Communities’, something similar to the ‘Groups’ of Facebook: users will be able to create thematic conversation sections, which in turn act as a filter against the amalgam of tweets that we find in our timeline. Thus, it will be enough to access the community of ‘feline lovers’, ‘surfers’ or ‘plant keepers’ to find tweets related to these matters.

The latest addition on the way will be the ‘Safety Mode’ or safety mode, for which we will stop seeing those abusive accounts or those that tend to advertising spam. This is how Twitter describes it: “When you are in safe mode, we detect accounts that can act maliciously and limit their ability to interact with you for 7 days. In addition, we will show their ‘replies’ to fewer people ».

More specifically, this safety mode will block and silence profiles that “are characterized by violent language, use insults or incite hatred”. Although the detection is automatic, we can preview these accounts to make a decision on a case-by-case basis. ‘Communities’ and ‘Safety Mode’ also do not have a release date.
