Daylight saving time is about to return
Daylight saving time is about to return

SUMMER TIME, HERE’S WHEN TO MOVE THE HANDS – This year the daylight saving time will come into force on the night between Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 March: precisely at 2:00 the hand will have to be moved forward by one hour, at 3:00. So you will sleep an hour less, but you will have more light in the evening. Daylight saving time will last until Sunday, October 23, when solar time will come back into effect.

WHY IT IS USED – The goal is to produce energy savings due to less use of electric lighting. The daylight saving time obviously cannot increase the hours of light available, but only induce a greater exploitation of the hours of light that are usually “wasted” due to the habits of time. With the use of summer time, in our country, 6 billion Kilowatt / h have been saved in 6 years (we are talking about the average annual requirement of about one million families), for a gain of almost 900 million euros. . It has been pointed out that, however, by increasing the hours of free time during the day, there is a greater consumption of fuel by circulating after working hours, before dinner.

WHAT EFFECTS CAN IT HAVE ON OUR ORGANISM – However, the change of time also has repercussions on our organism, especially in the very first days. Some people, in fact, complain of disturbances due to the alteration of the sleep-wake cycle. This is the same phenomenon that is found in people traveling by plane between countries separated by different time zones (the so-called jet lag); in this case, however, the effect is less because the time change is only one hour and many people do not feel any disturbance. The body may react in some cases with insomnia, fatigue and irritability.

SOME ADVICES – According to the neurologist and sleep medicine expert Gioacchino Mennuni, of the Columbus-Catholic University Integrated Complex of Rome, ” the extra hour of light that we will have delays the phase of falling asleep, linked to the production of melatonin favored precisely by dark”. Hence, the risk of insomnia. The advice is first of all to keep the time you get up in the morning unchanged, in order not to interrupt the regularity of the sleep-wake cycle. It is also useful not to overindulge with food and alcohol in the evening ”. All precautions to be followed for the first days following the return of summer time, in order to ‘reprogram’ the body’s internal clock more easily. In any case, the neurologist reassures, “ everything should return to normal, without major discomfort, within 2-3 days: the body’s adaptation to the one-hour variation, unless there are pathologies or conditions particular, it is in fact quite simple, since it is a minimum hourly variation ‘.
