Successor for “The Champions”? “Almost impossible, there is no recipe booklet,” says director Jan Verheyen

“Recognizability is an important factor in this,” says director Jan Verheyen in “The world today” on Radio 1. He directed a number of films about De Kampioenen, which were made after the series was discontinued.

“That amateur football team is a very recognizable biotope. It is very Flemish. In addition, that biotope also contains a number of characters who are enlargements of people we may know. The large entrepreneur who owns a football club, the trainer who has more success wil, the keeper who only comes for fun. Humor often works well if it is culturally determined. That is certainly the case here.”
