NEW YORK — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSD) announced that it sent a federal team to investigate the incident in which two subways collided Thursday in Manhattan, causing a derailment that left the at least 26 people with minor injuries. The incident led to disruptions in service on some subway lines that continued throughout Friday.

The NTSB’s arrival comes after a low-speed collision between an in-service Line 1 train and an out-of-service train caused a minor derailment, injuring more than two dozen people and wreaking havoc on traffic.

As of Friday, there was still no 1/2/3 service between 135th/137th Streets and Times Square-42 St. Line 2 trains were being rerouted onto the No. 5 line between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Nevins St The MTA said it expects a partial restoration of service sometime Friday, but there was still much work to be done in the tunnel.

How did the accident happen

According to investigators, a Line 1 train carrying passengers collided around 3:00 pm Thursday with a train on the same line but that was out of service, causing the minor derailment at the 96th Street station. , near Broadway, in the area of Upper West Side. The non-operating subway had previously been vandalized and four workers were servicing it, according to the MTA. That train was evacuated, as was the passenger train, which had about 300 people on board.

According to the FDNY, at least 26 people were taken to area hospitals with what were believed to be minor injuries.

What the research indicates

The investigation is in its preliminary stages. Richard Davey, president of New York City Transportation, said the out-of-service 1 train was vandalized early Thursday when its emergency cables were removed as a possible prank. Transit sources told NBC New York that cables were pulled at the 79th St. station and the train then headed to an area on a local track near the 96th St. station where crews were attempting to restore it for the service.

Davey said that at the time of the derailment, all but one of the cables had been reset. As workers rewired that train, a transit official told NBC New York that it “came back into operation” and began moving despite a red stop sign, causing the collision with the passenger train. in passing service.

“Obviously, two trains shouldn’t crash into each other. Let’s get to the bottom of that,” Davey said.

MTA officials said they have not ruled out human error. The NTSB said it will send a team to investigate the collision, including the agency’s president, and they will be on the scene Friday morning.

A passenger train behind the one that derailed also had to evacuate its 300 to 400 passengers, authorities said.
