UNITED STATES – The incident took place in one of the busiest areas of Manhattan, near Central Park. At least 24 people were injured this Thursday, January 4 in New York in a collision between two subways which caused the derailment of one of the trains, according to emergency services.

According to the New York Times, one of the metros carrying around 300 people entered a second train occupied by four technicians. The shock caused the derailment of the latter, the metropolitan transport management company (MTA) told the American daily.

24 people were injured, eight were taken to hospitals. None of these people are in serious condition, adds the New York Times, thanks to the low speed at which the metro ran. The city’s firefighters posted photos and videos of the two damaged trains, as you can see in the tweets above.

The immobilized train had been vandalized

The stationary train was being repaired by technicians after being vandalized. The brake cables had been pulled, according to New York subway official Richard Davey. At the time of the accident, all but one of the brake cables had been repaired, he said.

The passenger train was redirected to another track to bypass the stationary one. Except that the blocked train started to move for unknown reasons, causing the crash. Richard Davey ruled out any technical problems, saying that “the equipment was working” when talking about light signals. The accident could have been caused after human error, an investigation is underway to determine this.

Three lines of the network were shut down and the northwest of the main island of the megacity, the Upper West Side district of Manhattan, was completely cordoned off by firefighters, police, and ambulances. Authorities were not sure they would guarantee full service Friday morning during rush hour.
