Subsidy pot for electric cars almost empty again | Car

If the sale of new electric cars continues at the current pace, the subsidy pot will be used up within a month. Industry organizations are arguing for an increase in the subsidy budget in order to realize the green ambitions.

Since January 1, 3,350 euro subsidy has been available for the purchase of a new electric car with a catalog value of up to 45,000 euros. And it’s storming. Of the 71 million euros subsidy for 2022, 11.8 million euros remains. Data from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, which implements the subsidy scheme, shows that the sale of electric cars is constant. Last week, a subsidy of 3 million euros was requested. At that rate, the pot will be empty in four weeks.

The subsidy pot for second-hand electric cars has even more room. Of the total subsidy budget for this year, EUR 20.4 million is still EUR 6.8 million. Anyone who buys a second-hand electric car can receive 2000 euros from government support. The sale of electric used cars is also constant, at the current pace, that subsidy pot will also be forgiven in ten weeks.

Branch organization Bovag thinks that the larger supply of relatively cheaper electric cars will convince people. “They are popular, also in combination with private lease. It is a pity that the subsidy budget will soon run out again. There is money ready for subsidy for the coming years. That should now be available. Then you are now reducing CO2 emissions. An electric car that is sold now will also lead to a reduction in the coming years,” said spokesman Paul de Waal. The national government has reserved 186 million euros in subsidy for 2023 and 2024.

There is a spurt in sales because people are afraid to miss the subsidy

“There needs to be more money in the subsidy pot”, says Floris Liebrand of the Rai association. “The cabinet has very high ambitions to reduce emissions. Then you also have to stimulate that fiscally. If sales go well now, there will be a good second-hand market sooner. But the subsidy pot is almost empty. Now you will see a spurt in sales because otherwise people will miss 3350 euros in subsidy and after that you will get a dip in sales.”

Private individuals have now applied for a subsidy for more than 18,000 new electric cars, but the majority of this has yet to be delivered. In the first quarter, 12,385 electric cars were sold, of which slightly more than half to private individuals, according to figures from Bovag and Rai. Never before have so many electric cars been sold in the first quarter. One in six new cars was fully electric in the first three months.

Among the new cars, the Fiat 500e, Kia Niro and Peugeot 208 are the most popular with private individuals. Among second-hand electric cars, the Renault Zoë, Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen Golf are the most popular.
