Onlookers can observe an unusual trip on the Rhine at the weekend: an old submarine passes Krefeld, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Bonn, among other places, on its journey. Already on Friday it should dock in Duisburg.

A decommissioned submarine, which is currently on the Rhine, is scheduled to reach North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday. If everything goes according to plan, it will dock in Duisburg in the early evening (4.30 p.m.) coming from Nijmegen. According to the schedule, it had already reached North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday morning. According to live tracking, the pushed convoy was at Rheinberg on the Lower Rhine at around 2 p.m.

On Saturday morning we continue via Krefeld, Düsseldorf to Cologne. The destination of the submarine “U17”, which was decommissioned by the German Navy in 2010, is Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate), as a spokeswoman for the local technology museum announced.

The 48 meter long and 500 tonne colossus had previously been demilitarized at a Kiel shipyard and loaded onto a floating pontoon. At the end of April, the submarine began its three-week journey via the Kiel Canal, the North Sea and the Rhine. The arrival in Speyer is planned for May 17, where it will be processed in the workshop of the Technik Museum. The submarine is to have its final home in 2024 in the Technik Museum Sinsheim (Baden-Württemberg).
