Stuttgart’s first Bundesliga goalscorer Geiger dies

The eight-time national soccer player Rolf Geiger is dead. According to his family, the long-time honorary member of VfB Stuttgart died on Wednesday at the age of 89.

Geiger scored the Swabians’ first Bundesliga goal on August 31, 1963. Between 1957 and 1962 he played 116 games for Stuttgart in the Oberliga Süd. After a year at the Italian club AC Mantova, he came back to the Neckar and contributed 19 goals in another 70 games until 1967.

After his active career, Geiger remained associated with VfB as an honorary member. Due to his “outstanding achievements and lasting contributions,” he received honorary membership in 2010, the club announced on Wednesday. After his sporting career, Geiger also worked as an entrepreneur in the real estate industry.
