Fine dust levels in Stuttgart have declined in recent years. However, New Year’s Eve is usually the exception. How bad was the air in the boiler at the turn of the year?

The weather conditions were pretty good for Stuttgart city center. There was a light wind at the turn of the year. The total fogging of the cauldron, which is otherwise occasionally observed during New Year’s Eve fireworks, did not occur this time. Good view from half height of colorful rockets and glittering lights.

Of course, the spectacle was not without consequences for the air. And so she reports Baden-Württemberg State Institute for the Environment (LUBW) On New Year’s Day there was a sharp increase in particulate matter pollution during the night at several stations. At the Neckartor measuring point, the hourly average value for fine dust with small particles, which is particularly hazardous to health, was 110 micrograms per cubic meter around midnight. In the previous days, the values there had fluctuated between 1 and 15 micrograms.

This meant that the measuring point, which achieved questionable fame nationwide as the temporary leader, was not the station with the dirtiest air in Stuttgart. At Arnulf-Klett-Platz the value shot up to 191 micrograms. In Bad Cannstatt it was 120 micrograms. The values for fine dust with larger particles also went through the roof for around an hour.
