Stunning Images of the Milky Way and Night Landscapes: Astronomy Photographer of the Year Finalists

Amazing images of the Milky Way over night landscapes, shots of auroras, stars, comets and solar storms. The prestigious world competition of astrophotographers, organized by the British Royal Observatory in Greenwich, has published the images of this year’s finalists. Winners will be announced on September 14.

Jury of the fifteenth year of the competition Astronomy Photographer of the Year evaluated more than four thousand pictures from amateur and professional photographers from 64 countries of the world. Among the images from this year’s competition that have made it to the finalists are, for example, an impressive shot of starlight trails over the preserved trenches of the First World War at the Vimy Memorial in northern France, the Milky Way over an abandoned diamond processing factory in Namibia or the planet Jupiter accompanied by the moon Io and Europe.

According to the organizers, one of the astrophotographic highlights of 2022 was the appearance of the aurora over a much larger area than is usually the case. This is also shown in one of the final images, which captures this fascinating phenomenon above the silhouette of the Great Pollet rock arch off the Irish coast.

The winners of the nine competition categories, two special prizes and the overall winner will be announced on Thursday 14 September. The winning images will be displayed in an exhibition at the UK’s National Maritime Museum from Saturday 16 September, alongside a selection of other exceptional shortlisted images.

The photos will also be published in a book that is being prepared by the Collins publishing house in collaboration with Royal Museums in Greenwich. It will be available on-site and in the museum’s online store (from the opening date of the exhibition) and later also in regular bookshops (from 28 September).
