A new study suggests that eating just two gummy candies that children love can lead to “severe and prolonged” toxic reactions in them.
The researchers found that children under the age of six experienced low blood pressure, slow heart rate, unresponsiveness, and respiratory failure after ingesting just 1.7 mg of THC per 1 kg of body weight, regardless of age or gender.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known molecule in the cannabis plant and has psychoactive properties.
According to the British newspaper “The Sun”, Leslie Pippen, a co-author of the study, said: “We have seen a rise in unintended exposure to cannabis among children, largely due to edible products such as cakes, chocolate and chewing gum.”
Children who have the condition require hospital evaluation and medical monitoring and often need treatments such as supplemental oxygen or intravenous fluids, and the effects can last for hours or sometimes a whole day.
“These candies are made for adults who weigh 120 to 160 pounds on average, so for a 28-pound child, one piece could be enough to cause a coma or seizure,” Tucker Woods said.
“The lower the weight of the child, the higher the risk of a toxic dose of THC,” he added.
