Study Finds Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome at Higher Risk of Suicide

A new study reveals that women with polycystic ovary syndrome may be more likely to think about suicide.

According to the British newspaper The Guardian, polycystic ovary syndrome is a common health condition that can cause irregular menstruation, obesity, facial acne, and cysts in the ovaries, among other symptoms. The World Health Organization indicated that this condition is the main cause of infertility.

The study was conducted by researchers from Taiwan, who analyzed data on 8,960 women and girls aged 12 to 64 years who were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome in the period from 1997 to 2012.

After taking into account several factors, including psychological disorders and health problems experienced by the participants, the team found that women with polycystic ovary syndrome had an 8.47 times higher risk of suicide attempts compared to women without the syndrome.

When the team broke down the results by age, they found that the risk of suicide attempts was 5.38 times higher for teenage girls, 9.15 times higher for female adults under 40, and 3.75 times higher for older adult females.

The study authors point out that concerns about the impact of PCOS on the body, including potential infertility and the possibility of obesity, could be among the motivating factors for suicidal ideation.

This study is not the first of its kind to suggest a relationship between polycystic ovary syndrome and suicide.

Dr Sophie Williams from the University of Derby, who was not involved in the new research, said a number of studies had revealed similar results in recent years.

She added: “We know that women with polycystic ovary syndrome are more susceptible to depression and anxiety, and this has been shown repeatedly in a number of research papers.”

Williams advised women with this syndrome to visit a psychiatrist as soon as possible if they experience any symptoms of depression.
