Study confirms that caffeine decreases body fat and provides protection against diabetes

Because these studies are observational, a research team from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden was interested in finding evidence to confirm this, so they used “Mendelian randomization”, a technique used to find genetic evidence that supports a particular result.

The researchers looked at the role of common genetic variants of two genes involved in how quickly caffeine is metabolized in the body, CYP1A2 and AHR, in nearly 10,000 people in Europe.

They found that people with genetic variants associated with a slower metabolism of caffeine drank, on average, less coffee, yet had higher levels of caffeine in their blood, compared to people with fast caffeine metabolism who could reach or maintain the levels needed for its stimulant effects.

The results of the analysis also showed that the genetic causes of high levels of caffeine in the blood were associated with low weight (body mass index) and body fat, and were associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
