Studio Ghibli appears on Netflix: seven recommendations in a row | NOW

In more than thirty years, the limitless fantasy worlds of Studio Ghibli have won awards around the world. In February, March and April, Netflix adds all films from the Japanese animation studio. NU.nl puts in collaboration with Super guide seven viewing tips in a row.

Disney is slowly but surely removing all its films from Netflix, but other beloved children’s films are taking their place. The following films are currently available on the streaming service.

Castle in the Sky

People once built magical cities in the sky, but they were all abandoned and crashed. According to legend, only Laputa is still floating around somewhere. After the young miner Pazu finds a girl who literally fell from the sky, the two go looking for the illustrious city. In the meantime, they are being followed by various villains. The first official film from Studio Ghibli was immediately acclaimed for its high-quality hand-drawn animations, story and music.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Kiki is a training witch. According to tradition, she leaves her parents at the age of thirteen to live on her own in a city that a witch can use. The young teenager starts a parcel delivery service in the port city of Koriko, but soon difficulties come her way.

My Neighbor Totoro

The great gray cat spirit Totoro is still used today as an icon of Studio Ghibli. My Neighbor Totoro is therefore one of the more famous classics. Satsuki and Mei sisters move with their father to the countryside and discover friendly spirits in their house and the surrounding forest. The largest is Totoro and they soon become friends. In the meantime, the condition of Satsuki and Mei’s sick mother is deteriorating. Can Totoro mean something to the girls?

Princess Mononoke

The gods of nature are furious with the people, who increasingly cover the forest for their metal furnaces. Prince Ashitaka is cursed by a pig god, who slowly takes over his body. He looks for a solution and comes in contact with Princess Mononoke, a girl who is raised by an equally angry wolf god.

The anti-war message, which Studio Ghibli often uses in films, is being used in Princess Mononoke packed with many spiritual and imaginative elements. Both humans and animals are fighting for their existence. Can Ashitaka and Mononoke provide peace?

Spirited Away

Probably the best known and most acclaimed film from Ghibli. Spirited Away won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2002 and the Best Animation Film Oscar in 2003.

Ten-year-old Chihiro ends up at an abandoned fairground and discovers how her parents suddenly turned into pigs there. The girl appears to have entered a magical world, where she is put to work by a witch in a bathhouse for ghosts. Chihiro is looking for a way to get away with her parents.

Extra tips for April

Netflix has already added a large number of Ghibli titles in the last two months, but the range will be completed in April. In total there will be 21 films from the Japanese studio. View below two recommendations that appear on April 1.

Howl’s Moving Castle

In a kingdom where magic and technology coexist, an evil witch transforms the girl Sophie into an old woman. Magician Howl, who lives in a large walking castle, may be able to lift the curse. But in the meantime, he is also chased by the army, which wants to use its magic for a war.

Ponyo

A film for young and old, that interfaces with The little Mermaid has. The magical fish girl Brunhilde lives underwater with her father, because he hates people. When Brunhilde is caught by a fisherman, she comes into contact with the boy Sosuke on land. He calls her Ponyo and teaches her about earthly customs. She uses her magic to turn into a human.
