Studies: In these cities you can still find student jobs despite Corona

In addition to their studies, students sometimes work in gastronomy, which is difficult in the Corona period.

A study by the job platform Indeed shows that significantly fewer student jobs will be advertised in 2020 than last year.

With declines of around 25 percent, Nuremberg and Leipzig still do best in a comparison of the 14 most populous regions in Germany.

In Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main, on the other hand, more than half of the student jobs have fallen victim to the corona crisis.

Not only schools and the world of work, but also students are affected by the corona pandemic. In addition to the stricter protective measures, such as the mask requirement at some universities, the financing of the studies is becoming an ever greater challenge.

A study by the job platform Indeed, which Business Insider has received in advance, shows that student jobs have fallen sharply across Germany. To this end, Indeed compared the developments in online job advertisements in 2020 from the beginning of February to the end of September with the developments of the previous year in the same period. The 14 most populous German cities were considered.

The result: Students in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg are particularly hard hit, where with 57 and 56 percent respectively, more than half of the student jobs advertised have fallen victim to the Corona crisis.

Studies: Nuremberg and Leipzig hold up best with student jobs

The dilemma faced by the students shows that Nuremberg and Leipzig do best in the study, with a minus of 24 and 26 percent respectively. Cologne (minus 37 percent), Düsseldorf (minus 39 percent) and Hanover (minus 41 percent) follow behind. “In the current situation, a slight decline in student jobs is already a positive sign. That is why we looked at the cities in which students had a larger choice, ”comments Annina Hering, economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab, on the study.

Leipzig is still an exception, because the total number of all job advertisements fell to a similar level in the period under review. In the other areas, student jobs performed significantly worse than the entire local volume of job advertisements on the Indeed job platform.

If you compare the advertised student jobs with all job vacancies at federal level, it becomes clear how precarious the situation is for students. For all jobs there is a year-on-year decline of 21 percent, while job advertisements specifically for students fell by 51 percent in early September. This means that the lowest point of the advertised positions for students was just before the start of the semester, where there are usually many such jobs.

Studies: There is a wide gap between supply and demand for student jobs

It fits in with the fact that a particularly large number of searches for student jobs were made on Indeed at the time. At the moment, inquiries are at a peak at 47 percent above the previous year’s figure. Supply and demand therefore currently diverge widely. “In times of crisis, students are the first to be avoided in order to be able to secure the permanent workforce first,” explains economist Hering. If the corona crisis is overcome, it could also offer a great opportunity for students. “They are seen as cheap and flexible workers and can fill positions that companies do not want to advertise as temporary or even permanent positions,” Hering continues.

The students show themselves to be flexible: While only 0.6 percent of all searches on Indeed in the last twelve months were in connection with the term “home office”, this value amounts to almost 1.9 percent for student jobs, the study shows around three times as high. “If you cannot find a suitable part-time job in your own place of residence, you can always look for activities that can be done at home,” explains Annina Hering. Such creative approaches are now in demand from students.

The Indeed economist also gives some tips on the areas in which a comparatively large number of job advertisements are advertised. Education, delivery and parcel services, as well as retail and warehouse logistics are at the forefront. The trend is also positive in gastronomy.
