Students’ Religious Slogans Incident at Bethlehemacker Primary School in Bern

The incident occurred last Wednesday (December 13th) at the Bethlehemacker primary school in Bern. Several fifth and sixth graders are said to have formed a mob around a teacher during recess. They surrounded the woman and shouted religious slogans such as “Allahu akbar,” the “ Bern region bulletin from a letter to parents from the school.

“Intolerable”: Students surround teacher – school reacts

Headmaster Sebastian Teuscher sent this letter to the parents of three classes the day after the incident. “The situation shocked us as a school. The group’s behavior is intolerable,” it says. Teuscher told the “Anzeiger” that the incident was “very irritating” and had to be taken seriously.

The situation has actually calmed down in recent years. “The incident came a little out of nowhere,” said the school principal. The letter says the school has already taken action. The affected students now have to spend their long break separately and at a different time from the other students. They are always under the supervision of the class teacher. There would also be disciplinary measures such as reprimands, and the students would have to take part in a conversation to deal with the incident.

According to principal Teuscher, the students have since apologized. But they must “first clearly feel that they have exceeded boundaries before we can talk about reconciliation,” he told the “Anzeiger”.
