Student wins International Award for research: breast cancer

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Puebla recognized the doctoral student of the Oriente Biomedical Research Center (CIBIOR) Metepec, Alin Garcia Miranda, for obtaining a worldwide award given by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Alín García is currently a doctoral student at the CIBIOR and the program in Biomedical Sciences of the Autonomous University of Guerrero. He receives the award for his master’s work, which is entitled “Effect of Autophagy on the Proliferation, Migration and Death of Leptin-Stimulated Breast Cancer Cells”, with the advice and direction of the doctorto Paola Maycotte, researcher of chairs CONACYT in CIBIOR-IMSS and by the doctor Eduardo Castañeda from Autonomous University of Guerrero.

In this work, an important role of autophagy, a cellular degradation process, was found in the malignant characteristics of breast cancer cells treated with Leptin, a hormone from adipose tissue that is elevated in patients with obesity.

This work is important because obesity has a high incidence in the Mexican population and increases the risk of developing breast cancer, seriously affecting the prognosis of evolution and response to treatment.

The work suggests that inhibition of autophagy could be a potential treatment for breast cancer in obese patients.

For her part, the teacher in biomedical sciences, Alin Garcia Miranda, expressed that what motivated her to carry out this research was the desire to acquire knowledge about the relationship between obesity and cancer. It expresses its interest in continuing to contribute to this topic, in generating knowledge that is built over the years of effort.

Likewise, shared that the work was done in Puebla, with the collaboration of two institutions that deserve to be recognized and the opportunity to make it known in such a large meeting with researchers from around the world, “It’s very exciting”, expressed the teacher in Biomedical sciences.

Share that he received the news on January 21 through an email where he was notified that he was the winner, Alín García received with joy the congratulations of the General Director of the IMSS, maestro Zoé Robledo Aburto, through their social networks.

The award of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) It is awarded to young researchers from countries that are developing high-quality cancer research. The winner will attend the association’s annual meeting (which will be virtual this year) where she will have the opportunity to present her work, carried out in the IMSS Puebla and disseminate it internationally.
