Student Facing Expulsion Launches Petition in Bordeaux for Regularization

A final year student, Ana-Maria Baciu arrived in Bordeaux in 2019 for medical reasons. She is awaiting regularization while her mother is required to leave French territory. A petition is launched.

The mobilization continues at Magendie high school for Shenaya Fernando Onel, a Sri Lankan high school student threatened with expulsion. The students, their parents and teachers gathered this Thursday, October 5, to support her and also alert them to the case of another young person threatened with expulsion.

“Have a normal life”

Ana-Maria Baciu arrived in France in 2019 with her mother, Aurélia Pospecu. Suffering from a cancerous brain tumor, the young woman cannot be treated in her country of origin:

“The doctors there gave me three months to live. We arrived in Bordeaux because we knew a friend there. I was taken care of at Pellegrin hospital. »

Upon their arrival in France, Ana-Maria Baciu and her mother applied for asylum. They live in a CADA for a year. Asylum requests are rejected. Ana-Maria Baciu must be monitored regularly and perform MRI scans. Her mother was hired on a permanent contract in the mass distribution sector.

They are today hosted by the Diaconate. Ana-Maria hopes to be regularized in order to continue her studies in France:

“Since I have been here, we have only had temporary accommodation solutions. I would like to have a normal life and stability. I want to study political science and international relations. »

Right to education

Sandrine Nebout, her French teacher at the educational unit for arriving allophone students (UPE2A) in Magendie, protests:

“She is a young girl full of will. She learned French at the hospital just to understand what was being said about her case. She is coming out of a traumatic experience and she is reassured by the idea of living in France, of learning and considering a future and a new life. »

“The right to education is fundamental”, adds Adeline Masson, member of the FCPE (federation of parents), who describes an “aberrant situation”. Like the professors who are members of the support committee, she speaks of “equal opportunities” undermined by the expulsion procedures:

“Ana-Maria is in school and sees herself here, she has developed stable ties. As with Shenaya, the OQTF is a decision that disrupts integration and creates instability. »

Voted during an AGM meeting this Thursday, a new rally in support of the two high school girls is planned for Monday October 9, at 10 a.m., in front of the Magendie gates. For its part, the Prefecture has not yet responded to our request.

Contacted, the Gironde prefecture confirms the issuance of an OQTF for Aurélia Pospecu, following the rejection of an asylum request and a residence permit. She appealed the decision to the administrative court of appeal. As for Ana-Maria Baciu, a “sick foreigner application and a request for regularization for exceptional admission to stay” were submitted at the same time as her mother. “The files are currently being examined,” indicates the prefecture.
