Tooske Ragas struggled for a while with her role as a stepmother. The 52-year-old presenter tells in the new WOMAN Glossy that she became insecure about the idea that she has “the same duties, but not the same rights” as the biological parents.
Tooske and her husband Bastiaan have three daughters together: Leentje, Fien and Catoo. From a previous marriage to Laura Vlasblom, Bastiaan also has a son named Sem. Tooske says that she sees Sem as her own child, but has struggled with her role as a stepmother. “As a step parent, you must fulfill all duties with full dedication and all the love in your heart that every parent feels for their child. Your duties are the same, but not your rights,” said the presenter.
“If one of the biological parents says: nice what you made up, but that’s not happening for a while… then you have nothing to say. It’s a totally impossible task actually. You can be pushed aside at any time. “
The idea that she had no control over the situation made Ragas insecure. “It did eat me up for a while. I suffered in silence because I didn’t give words to it for a long time and just swallowed everything.” After a conversation with Bastiaan, she felt better. “I learned a lot from that. Again the lesson that I can take my feeling seriously, that I don’t have to subordinate myself to the situation and that I don’t have to efface myself at the expense of myself.”
