Struck by a dust storm, Colorado invaded by thousands of tumbleweeds

Well-known landscapes of westerns, tumbleweed, twirling in French, invaded the streets of Colorado. This phenomenon is the result of the dust storm that hit this American state on Wednesday December 15, reports HuffPost.

Residents of residential areas were therefore able to see these dry and bushy vegetable balls rolling on the ground, carried by the wind, pass in front of their windows. It is the aerial part of certain plants growing in a desert or semi-desert environment and which, at the end of the vegetative cycle, dries up and becomes detached from the root system.

Very invasive plants

These invasive species in the United States were imported from Russia in the 19th century. When the environment is favorable to them, they can be very invasive. Forming impressive clusters, tumbleweeds can sometimes block roads.

At the end of the year, the United States was hit by severe weather phenomena. At least 80 people have died in Kentucky after devastating tornadoes hit December 10. Five days later, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa were swept away by violent dust storms.
