Hurricane “Henri” sets course for New York

The US weather services are warning of the strongest storm on the east coast of the US for around ten years. There could be violent gusts of wind, storm surges and power outages. The largest city in the country would also be particularly affected.

Parts of the US east coast, including New York, are preparing for one of the strongest storms in around a decade. The tropical storm “Henri” is likely to become a hurricane, the US Hurricane Center (NHC) announced. The weather services warn of dangerous gusts of wind, storm surges, heavy rain and floods. “Henri” is due to hit land on Sunday in Long Island or southern New England.

Authorities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont called on people to prepare for the storm. In Massachusetts, parks and beaches are said to be closed from today through Monday. The power supply for up to 300,000 people could fail there, according to the authorities.

According to the NHC, “Henri” reaches wind speeds of 110 kilometers per hour. Heavy rains were expected in New York and adjacent New England. It would be the first hurricane to hit the area directly in 30 years. In 1991, Hurricane “Bob” killed 17 people there. The last hurricane warning for New York was in August 2011 for hurricane “Irene”. A year later, tropical storm “Sandy” wreaked havoc, killing 44 people.
