Strong heat wave coming in Greece: ‘It will be blistering hot for days’

Today it is relatively easy, but on Wednesday and especially Thursday temperatures up to 43 degrees Celsius are expected in parts of Greece. The Greek meteorological service EMY warns about this in a extraordinary message.

Number of days long

“We have seen temperatures of 40 degrees in that corner of Europe a few times in recent weeks,” says meteorologist Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar. “But now it will be sweltering hot for a few days.”

The highest temperatures are expected in the north and center of the country. Unfortunately for the people there, it hardly cools down at night: it becomes sticky nights with temperatures of at least 25 degrees.

Neighboring neighboring countries North Macedonia and to a lesser extent Bulgaria are also seeing very high levels of mercury. In ‘the heel of the boot’ of Italy, the Apulia region, it will also be heading towards 40 degrees on Thursday.

Islands less hot

Many Dutch tourists visit the more southern Greek islands such as Rhodes, Crete and Kos. Kroon: “It gets a bit less hot there at 32 to 37 degrees. That’s because these islands are surrounded by cooling seawater.”

History was made in the Netherlands in 2019 when it became hotter than 40 degrees Celsius for the first time at the end of July of that year, eventually two days in a row. The heat record in Europe is 48 degrees and was measured in, yes, the Greek capital Athens in 1977.
