Security forces in Sudan have fired tear gas to break up demonstrations. Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in several cities to protest against the recent coup of army chief Burhan.
The tear gas was also used during a sitting protest by teachers. They demonstrated at the Ministry of Education in Khartoum against the seizure of power by the army. More than 100 people have been arrested during the sit-in.
The protesters took part in a two-day campaign of civil disobedience. It was proclaimed by protest organizations that spearheaded mass demonstrations in 2019 that eventually led to the resignation of dictator Bashir.
No Internet
Pro-democracy Sudanese demonstrate in various ways that they do not agree with the army coup of October 25. For example, roadblocks were erected in Khartoum this weekend; some stores kept their doors closed as part of an announced strike.
Because the internet has been shut down since the coup, it is difficult for the protest organizations to reach their full supporters. That is why they are now working with text messages to inform activists.
