Strengthening social security and universal health have been the stronghold of Costa Rica

San José, Apr 6 (elmundo.cr) – The President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, participated this morning in the daily conference offered by the director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebresyus, prior to World Health Day.

“The strengthening of social security and universal health have been the stronghold of Costa Rica, which has protected us and which has minimized the differences between people with higher incomes and those with minors,” said the president.

Alvarado recalled the country’s drive – together with the WHO – to create a Health Technologies Repository (C-TAP), which seeks to provide universal and equal access to safe and effective vaccines, treatments, medicines and diagnostics, as well as to the FACE initiative, -together with ECLAC-, which aims to provide developing countries with the necessary funds to face the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic on the economy and people, in concessional and supportive terms.

On equitable access, Alvarado Quesada pointed to the momentum of a new international treaty for pandemic preparedness and response. Costa Rica, and 24 other countries, seek to foster collaboration among nations, prevent the temptation of isolation, nationalism, and overcome the challenges of health crises in a spirit of solidarity and cooperation.

«The globalized world had not experienced the impact of a pandemic of this magnitude. We have to learn and be ready. To be ready means to undertake a coordinated and solidary action, that does not distinguish between more development and less development, urban or rural ”, said the president.

In addition, he emphasized that health goes beyond treating an illness.

“From a comprehensive perspective, well-being must consider that national budgets support health, education and infrastructure,” he added.

Underlining that the post-pandemic recovery must be marked by solidarity among all countries, he reiterated the importance of financing – in favorable conditions for countries in poverty or emerging countries – so that they can face the long and medium-term effects of this crisis. , and thus increase your room for maneuver.

In this sense, and always from solidarity and cooperation, Alvarado pointed out that an economic recovery is not possible if it does not include emerging nations or those in poverty.
