Strasbourg relies on safety, serenity in Colmar and prevention in Mulhouse

■ Strasbourg

Two years ago, at least 300 cars were set on fire during New Year’s Eve, in the greater Strasbourg area. The night had been peppered with violence.

This resurgence of urban violence – which had peaked in the mid-1990s – prompted the prefecture to provide, again this year, a “substantial” security system in the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg.

Thus, the firefighters will be escorted by the police during certain interventions, in particular for the extinction of vehicle fires or garbage cans in certain neighborhoods.

The prefecture has also issued an order establishing a curfew for minors under 16 unaccompanied by a parent, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., on New Year’s Eve in the municipalities of Strasbourg, Hoenheim, Bischheim, Schiltigheim, Illkirch-Graffenstaden, Lingolsheim and Ostwald.

Bars and restaurants in Bas-Rhin will close their doors at 3 a.m.

For its part, the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg finances the guarding of 18 car parks, or 7,500 spaces, from Friday December 31 at noon to Saturday January 1 in the evening.

As in 2020, a comprehensive action plan taking into account the health and safety context is being implemented. The device relates in particular to the ban until January 3, 2022 at 8 a.m. on the port, transport, purchase, sale and transfer of all fireworks and pyrotechnic articles.

■ Colmar

In Colmar, Mayor Eric Straumann says he is “less worried” about the unfolding of New Year’s Eve than a year ago.

Rather serene, the councilor also relies on a system that has proven itself for several years in the Europe district and will be renewed this year, the “citizen presence”, that is to say a certain number of association officials who patrol during the evening in order to get in touch with the population.

In Colmar, in recent years, New Year’s evenings have generally taken place in peace.

■ Mulhouse

In Mulhouse, especially in the Drouot district, recent weeks have already been turbulent.

But if there is any overflow, the police should be able to implement the usual means of prevention, namely to rely in particular on video surveillance.

To avoid overflows and act upstream, the municipality also relies on its associations. Several activities will be organized by associations from Mulhouse on December 31, with the idea of a friendly New Year and to prevent the youngest from meeting outside.
