Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia A photographer named Greg McCown accidentally caught a strange phenomenon in the sky in Arizona, United States. Unusual red spots appear, resembling streaks.

In fact, McCown was the leader of a photo tour of the storm that was predicted to occur on June 16, 2023. However, the storm never came. As a result, he brought the group to Windy Point, a peak on Mount Lemmon.

There, McCown and his entourage encountered another phenomenon which turned out to be named ‘Sprites’.

“A major storm descended on Mexico about 150 miles south of our position at Windy Point, lining up perfectly with the Milky Way’s core,” McCown said, quoted from PetaPixel, Wednesday (16/8/2023).

“After receiving instructions on how to catch the ‘Sprite’, members of our group finally managed to catch the phenomenon,” he added.

What Are Sprites?

Sprites were only discovered about 20 years ago, referring to the phenomenon of lightning discharges into the upper atmosphere. This phenomenon occurred about 50 miles above the storm. Usually, Sprites appear moments after a burst of lightning.

Sprites have a unique shape, resembling lightning. The difference is, the color is clearly red or pink. At a glance, his form was like a flash of light that surged upwards in streaks.

In a way, Sprites are a consequence of lightning activity. When lightning triggers a violent electrical surge, a large electric field is created between the thundercloud and the upper atmosphere.

As a result, the gas particles will be ionized and cause flashes of light in the form of Sprites. This phenomenon is actually rare and difficult to observe. This is because events often occur quickly, even in less than 1 second.
