5 p.m .: End of the heat on the weekend

NRW can breathe a sigh of relief: the great heat is over for now. It can be up to 26 degrees on Saturday. However, the DWD expects changeable weather with clouds, showers and fresh wind. It also cools down significantly at night: on Sunday night it should be a maximum of 15 degrees. Sunday it cools down further. A maximum of 24 degrees are expected. Showers are to be expected.

12.09 p.m.: Storm causes damage

The thunderstorm caused local damage. The main focus was in Essen’s south and south-east quarters. Trees fell, branches broke, blocking roads and sidewalks. Rail traffic was also disrupted. In the eastern approach of the Essen main station, a falling tree tore down a catenary wire of the railway. The broken contact wire lying on the ground caused power outages and thus disruptions in rail traffic. At least two lanes remained.

On the “Franziskanerhöhe” street, a tree fell onto the roof of a residential building and damaged the roof and facade. A linden tree with a trunk diameter of around 40 centimeters fell over completely on Spichernstrasse and buried four parked cars under it. Several trees lost branches that either got stuck in the branches or fell straight to the ground. As of 11:00 a.m., the Essen fire brigade had completed 25 missions of this type. It remained with property damage in all cases.

8.54 a.m.: The rail chaos continues

Friday is not a good day for train drivers! There is a technical malfunction on the route between Dortmund-Dorstfeld and Lütgendortmund, which is why partial failures and delays are also possible here.

In the Hennef (Sieg) area there was also a point fault, which is why there are delays here too.

In addition to RE 2, RE 42, RB 33 and S1, the following trains in NRW are now also affected:

  • S 4: Unna – Unna-Königsborn – Dortmund-Dorstfeld – Dortmund-Lütgendortmund and opposite direction
  • RE 9: Aachen – Eschweiler – Düren – Horrem – Cologne – Siegburg / Bonn – Betzdorf – Siegen and opposite direction
  • S 12: Horrem – Cologne – Troisdorf – Siegburg – Hennef (Sieg) – Eitorf – Au and opposite direction
  • S 13 / S 19: Düren – Horrem – Cologne-Hansaring – Cologne / Bonn Airport – Troisdorf – Siegburg / Bonn – Hennef – Au and opposite direction

8.23 a.m.: Track closure lifted – rail chaos remains for the time being

The railway has lifted the line closure due to the fallen tree in the Essen area, but the section of the line cannot yet be used by all trains.

  • The trains on lines RE 2 and RE 42 will be diverted via Essen-Altenessen, the Mülheim Hbf and Essen Hbf stops will be omitted
  • The trains of the line RB 33 from the direction of Aachen Hbf end and begin in Duisburg, there are partial cancellations between Duisburg and Essen
  • On the S1 line you have to expect delays and partial cancellations

Travelers to Mülheim (Ruhr) Hbf use tram 901 from Duisburg Hbf, which takes around 22 minutes according to the train. If you want to travel to Essen Hbf, you can use the U11, U17 or the 108 tram from Essen-Altenessen. The journey time is 8 to 11 minutes.

Further changes may occur at short notice. Therefore, the railway continues to advise: “Please check the train route in the travel information.” The railway is not yet able to provide any information about the duration of the disruption.

8:08 a.m.: Windhose uproots a tree – it crashes into cars

For about an hour there has been a lot of work for the Essen fire brigade, because a windpipe has swept over the city. In Spichernstrasse she uprooted a tree that fell lengthways onto four parked cars.

The fire brigade is on site and will saw and remove the tree. Fortunately, nobody was injured by the fallen tree.

7.53 a.m.: Train chaos at Essen train station!

The fallen tree hinders the train traffic on a section of the route. That is why all trains on the RB 33 line from Aachen currently start and end in Duisburg Central Station and begin there.

Lines RE 2 and RE 42 are also affected. The trains stop at the next station and wait there. This is why there will probably be delays and partial cancellations on the lines in the near future.

These lines are affected by the fallen tree

According to the railway, further changes in the train route could be made in the short term.

These lines with the following stops are affected:

  • RE 2: Düsseldorf – Duisburg – Essen – Gelsenkirchen – Recklinghausen – Münster
  • RE 2: Münster – Recklinghausen – Gelsenkirchen – Essen – Duisburg – Düsseldorf
  • RB 33: Aachen / Heinsberg – Mönchengladbach – Krefeld – Duisburg – Essen Hbf RB 33: Essen Hbf – Duisburg – Krefeld – Mönchengladbach – Heinsberg / Aachen
  • RE 42: Mönchengladbach – Krefeld – Essen – Gelsenkirchen – Recklinghausen – Haltern – Münster
  • RE 42: Münster – Haltern – Recklinghausen – Gelsenkirchen – Essen – Krefeld – Mönchengladbach

That is now advising Deutsche Bahn

Got to take one of those trains this morning? The railway advises: “Please check the train route in the travel information.” There you will also find possible alternatives.

How long the disturbance will last, the railway could not say in the morning. (vh)
