NEW YORK (AP) – New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday that the death toll in his state from storms generated by the remnants of Hurricane Ida has risen to at least 23.

Murphy spoke as his state and other northeastern entities faced flooding, tornado damage and continued calls for rescue after the storm took residents and authorities by surprise.

At least 43 people have died from the storms from Maryland to Connecticut.
