Stories of Covid-19 Patients Rejected by Three Hospitals in Jakarta

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Dinda, a private employee in South Jakarta, is confused about the fate of her brother, Aditya (not her real name). Aditya tested positive for the corona virus (Covid-19) after doing an independent swab test.

Dinda said that her sister took the initiative to carry out an independent swab test at a hospital in Jakarta, because she was worried that she would catch it from a relative who had died and tested positive for Covid-19.

“My brother is 54 years old, has a comorbid hypertension and type one diabetes. He had visited a Covid-19 patient, because he was not feeling well, he decided to do an independent swab with his wife,” said Dinda when contacted. CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (13/8).

The swab was carried out on Tuesday (11/8), the results of the swab at a cost of Rp2,050,000 came out on Wednesday (12/8), from which Aditya was confirmed positive while his wife was tested negative for Covid-19.

However, the hospital staff only gave the results of the swab without explaining further steps that Aditya must take as a positive patient for Covid-19.

“We only received the swab result letter, it was late, it had to be taken ourselves and when it was positive there was no further treatment, the letter was given just like that, plus the test results should come out the same day but more than 24 hours,” said Dinda.

Without any notification from the hospital where Aditya swab, Dinda immediately looked for a hospital to treat her brother. Accompanied by other relatives, Dinda, and Aditya immediately looked for the hospital on Wednesday night.

“We decided to go to the referral hospital in Central Jakarta, because we heard that the referral hospital in East Jakarta was full,” he said.

Dinda arrived Wednesday (12/8) at midnight at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, she was ready to accept if the doctor advised her brother to be self-isolated despite having comorbids and fever symptoms. Arriving at the Emergency Room (IGD), Dinda was informed that her brother could not be examined because the hospital was full.

“In the emergency room we entered, we explained to the doctor in the emergency room that our brother had a positive swab, but the doctor said he could not check because the hospital was full,” said Dinda.

In fact, he hopes that at least his brother can be checked on his health condition first. If indeed the doctor asks for independent isolation, Dinda and his family are ready to treat him with the established directions and protocols.

“We said, ‘You can’t see the condition first doc, given a prescription for drugs or vitamins, if we have to be treated at home what should we do’, but the doctor said we couldn’t because it violated the SOP, he said there had to be a thorough examination, after that if I had to. being treated, the hospital must take care while at the Army Hospital it doesn’t make any difference, “said Dinda.

Hearing this information, Dinda then asked for a hospital recommendation that could examine her brother. The hospital doctor suggested going to the Friendship Hospital.

However, after Dinda made contact by telephone with the Friendship Hospital, it turned out that the conditions were the same. Dinda was asked to find another hospital to treat her brother.

Not losing his mind, he then looked for another referral hospital. Dinda received news from her colleague to try to get her brother checked at Pertamina Jaya Hospital. Pertamina Jaya Hospital is one of the references for Covid-19 in East Jakarta.

From the RSPAD in Central Jakarta, that night he went to Pertamina Jaya Hospital in East Jakarta with the hope that his brother could receive treatment more easily because he is a resident of East Jakarta.

However, it turned out that he was repelled even before setting foot in the hospital lobby. When entering the parking lot, Dewi said that she was stopped by security and was asked about the purpose of her arrival.

“We arrived at Pertamina Jaya at one night, but we don’t know the process at Pertamina Jaya, wong The security forces intercepted their entry by asking for a referral letter, wow, no, we were just going to the hospital, “said Dinda.

The security then said there needed to be a referral to enter Pertamina Jaya, Dinda was advised to find another hospital that could provide a referral.

Earlier that day, Dinda was still looking for a referral hospital in the East Jakarta area. Not far from the location of Pertamina Jaya Hospital, there are two private hospitals that he wants to visit.

“During the commute to the hospital, my brother did not get out of the car, only me and my uncle,” said Dinda.

He also then went to a Private Hospital not far from Pertamina Jaya Hospital. There, Dinda was also rejected.

“I conveyed what I meant earlier, then the doctor said, ‘I’m sorry we actually don’t really understand if there is a Covid patient what the procedure is, because this is the result of the swab not from this hospital. So we can’t refer to it’,” said Dinda imitating the hospital official’s sentence.

Dinda was told by the officer to return to the hospital that had issued the results of the swab because only that hospital could provide a referral.

He came home empty-handed. Thursday (8/13) morning, he was accompanied by his family and brother to the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) where his brother did a swab. Upon arrival, Aditya entered the emergency room and was immediately examined by a doctor.

That morning the results showed Aditya’s heart problem. He should be referred to a hospital that has the ability to monitor the heart.

“We asked for a find bed here at RSUI. But they don’t treat Covid-19 patients, so this is the umpteenth hospital that has rejected us, “said Dinda.

Until 13.00 WIB Thursday, the older brother was still in the ER at the RSUI while waiting for the referral hospital. Good news emerged in the afternoon, Dinda said that UI Hospital finally opened a ward for Covid-19 isolation.

“Finally, UI Hospital opened a ward for covid isolation. Previously, it was private financing. But because it was tested positive, we consulted the Ministry of Health and reportedly it will be funded by the government,” said Dinda.

Dinda has gone through the difficult experience of finding a Covid-19 referral hospital. He hopes that no more people will suffer the same fate as him.

“Because of this our position is not too difficult, in the sense that there are cars, there are credit, so maybe it is not as difficult as other residents who really need it, even if for example they have to pay for the service they may still be able to. But what about other residents, so this must be clarified, how is the flow. if rejected somewhere, “said Dewi.

Deputy Head of the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, Brigadier General TNI Budi Sulistya admitted that currently the ICU room for the treatment of Covid-19 patients is full. It is hoped that patients with mild symptoms can be isolated independently, while for severe symptoms they can seek another referral hospital.

“There are indeed many, for now our Covid ICU is full, so for very serious cases, don’t go to the Army Hospital because it is currently full, you can go to another referral hospital,” he told CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (13/8).

Meanwhile, the Director of Friendship Hospital, Rogayah, said that the hospital was indeed full of Covid-19 patients, but his party still accepts referral patients.

“It is full but later decreases, there will continue to be patients who are affected by Covid-19. So that they can still accept Covid-19 patients,” he said.

Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria previously confirmed that the capacity of the Covid-19 referral hospital was still sufficient. However, he acknowledged that there was an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients in a number of hospitals.

“Not overload. Our capacity (bed) is more than adequate. There is indeed an increase from 45 to 55 percent, “said Riza when confirmed, Wednesday (12/8).

Jakarta currently has 59 referral hospitals, with a capacity of 4,556 beds, and 659 ICUs scattered throughout the Jakarta area.

Riza ensured that with the current hospital bed capacity, no Covid positive patient would be neglected.
