The market-wide S&P 500 gained 0.88 percent to 3,909.46 points, and is only slightly more than 40 points short of its record. Investors were already looking excitedly at consumer price figures from the US on the Wednesday before the stock market launch, after fears of inflation had recently pushed bond yields up.
