Market report Fri. 03/18/2022 – Triple expiry – DAX lighter
TUI major shareholder tries to circumvent sanctions – HelloFresh top value

Friday was the big expiration day. That may have been one reason why the leading index had its daily low at 14,132 points at 1 p.m. So just at the time when options and futures on the DAX, TecDAX and MDAX expired. Then it went up again continuously until the end at 14,351 points. Even if there was a small minus of 36 points or 0.3% on a daily basis: on a weekly basis, the DAX advanced by almost 5%. Is that already the formation of the bottom? No says Jochen Stanzl, Chief Market Analyst CMC. HelloFresh was the leader in the DAX with a plus of 8%. Here you can catch up the losses of the past few days. The turnaround in interest rates in the USA continued to be a major topic. But not only the Fed had news to offer. There are also exciting monetary policy signals from Japan, England, Russia and Germany. The excitement of the day came from Russia and affects TUI. Major shareholder Alexei Mordashov is one of the oligarchs who have been sanctioned. Shares were frozen and his expulsion from the supervisory board was the result. Now the highlight: He has transferred his shares to his wife and the sanctions may now be in vain…

Imagine it’s war and you want to take precautions

How would you invest now is one of the questions I get asked the most at the moment. As a rule, I always ask my counterpart about their personal long-term investment plan and why they would like to deviate from it. Why, for whom, how much, how long, with which return opportunities or risk of loss would you like to invest your assets without sleeping badly. But the question of a personal investment plan is currently not sufficient for a sensible investment strategy. At the moment I also have to think geopolitically about which Ukraine war scenario I am going to assume. I expect a de-escalation, which the stock exchanges have assumed in the last few days. Or with an ongoing warlike situation or do I even expect the worst that the war in Europe will spread. Then I would have to change my overweight in European equities, which was originally planned for this year. The level of escalation of the Ukraine war also has an overall impact on the profits of globally listed companies and thus on my personal weighting of stocks. It has a strong impact on inflation, interest rates, economic growth, commodity prices and, and, and. That doesn’t mean you should throw your personal long-term investment plan overboard. But one should take into account the war scenario that one is assuming, especially with short and medium-term investments. The fund company Pictet Asset Management, for example, assumes 50 percent that the war will de-escalate, 30 percent that the conflict will continue and 20 percent that it will escalate. They expect stock earnings to rise 10 percent if the war de-escalates, down 10 percent if the war continues, and drop 25 percent if the Ukraine war escalates. Depending on the scenario, the best performers are different: in the event of a de-escalation, it is stocks, especially cyclicals and value stocks and the UK, Japan and China regions. If the war continues, one would be better protected with commodities, the big quality stocks from the USA and with dollars. And should the worst happen, which I personally don’t want to assume, one would rather have long-term government bonds with the best credit ratings, inflation linkers, Swiss equities and gold in the portfolio. Quite independently of the events of the war, seasonal trader Holger Klein, a guest on the podcast GELDMEISTERIN (https://anchor.fm/geldmeisterin). I hope we hear each other!
