STEPANAKERT – The refugees Armenia who saved themselves from a six-week war between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians have started returning to their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh.

They are trying to rebuild a shattered life after Russia last week brokered peace talks in the region.

Two convoys of buses carrying residents arrived in the mountainous region capital Stepanakert from neighboring Armenia at the weekend.

Under the terms of the agreement, control of the main city of Stepanakert, will remain with the ethnic Armenians even if they are forced to hand over other lands to the victorious Azerbaijan. (Read Also: Russian Troops See the Bodies of Armenian Army Lying on the Street)

On Monday, refugees lined up in the center of Stepanakert, which has been abandoned for several weeks. They are lining up to get humanitarian aid containing basic items such as canned goods and pasta. (See Infographic: After Admitting Biden Wins, Trump Tweets: I Win!)

Some said they came back with a heavy heart. “I’ve seen the third war here. In 1992 and 2016 I didn’t leave town for even a minute. But this time it’s terrible, ”said a middle-aged woman who declined to give her name.
