F. Richard Pappas says to the newspaper that Sondheim, known for musicals such as “West Side Story” and “Sweeney Todd”, died suddenly at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut the day after celebrating Thanksgiving with friends.

Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930 in New York and became an early part of the musical community in the city. He played the piano as a seven-year-old, and his family were friends with Oscar Hammerstein II – who was part of the duo Rodgers and Hammerstein who wrote the musicals “Oklahoma!” and «The Sound of Music».
In his long career, Sondheim has won eight Grammy Awards, eight Tony Awards, including an honorary award, and an Academy Award. He was nominated for many more Grammy and Tony Awards in addition to two Golden Globe Awards.
